Advocacy & Interpreting
The bi-lingual Health Advocacy & Interpreting Service is provided by a team of trained health advocates with tested experience and awareness of barriers that affect access to health care services. This service ensures an equal access to primary and community health care services for all residents of Tower Hamlets.
Our trained staff speak a variety of languages, including:- Bengali/Sylheti, Somali, Chinese (Mandarin & Cantonese), Turkish, French, Vietnamese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Urdu, Hindi etc. Other languages such as and including British Sign Language (BSL) are provided through a our staff bank and outside agencies including a locally based service, PRAXIS.
The in-house service team directly provides approximately 82% of the support we offer, 14% is delivered using bank staff and outside agencies due to the diversity of our supported communities and uniqueness of their languages. Of our activities Bengali/Sylheti is the largest (50.7%), Punjabi/Hindi/Urdu (4.0%), Somali (3.9%), Turkish (3.2%), Mandarin/Cantonese (3.0%), Portuguese (3.0%), Polish (3.0%), Russian (1.9%).

BSL Support
We aim to ensure all patients can access all our services therefore we have introduced a mobile number 078 0340 6833 for British Sign Language (BSL) service users texts.
This number should be used by BSL service users to request BSL interpreters.
We would be grateful if all BSL patients and their carers always cancel already booked interpreters if necessary by texting us on 078 0340 6833 as each if the session is not used it costs the service £120, wasting the NHS money.
All the services we support are requested to emphasise this to the BSL service users or their carers.

- Pre-booked appointments for all other GPs and Community Health Services (CHS)
- 24 hours telephone interpreting available and accessible by all GPs and CHS
