We are looking forward to taking on Tower Hamlets' school health and wellbeing service on 1st September. The service provides essential specialist nursing care, advice and support to school-age children and young people.
We already provide the Borough's health visiting service and in taking on school health we have an exciting opportunity to grow and fully integrate 0-19 service provision in Tower Hamlets and to strengthen links between general practice, community services and schools in our localities. This is a major step forward in our aim for better joint working between service to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for local children, young people and their family and carers. We have already received strong support for our innovative service model from a number of schools with whom we have started to engage. We look forward to welcoming our new colleagues in the school health service who will be joining us from the current service provider, Compass Wellbeing, and we are working hard to ensure there is a smooth and seamless transition for users of the service and staff. We are making changes to services at the St Andrews Health Centre and The Barkantine Walk-in Centres.
From 1st August 2018, the St Andrews Health Centre and The Barkantine no longer offer ‘walk-in centre’ services. Instead, their service offers bookable appointment slots, available by calling NHS 111 or your GP practice, if you are registered in Tower Hamlets. This change will mean people can be seen more quickly by a GP or nurse and avoid long waiting times. To use the service, residents must be registered with a Tower Hamlets GP surgery. If you live in in Tower Hamlets and you are not registered with a practice, we encourage you to do so to receive the full benefits of the NHS. Does this mean the services at the St Andrews Health Centre and The Barkantine are closing? No. The services are definitely not closing. The number of GP and nurse appointments or opening hours will not be reduced. There will be no changes to the GP services for registered patients at either practice. Why are we making these changes?
How are people going to find out about these changes? GP practices in Tower Hamlets will offer information in the form of posters, leaflets and flyers, usually available in the reception area. These can also be downloaded below if you are interested in the detail. I don't have a GP; how do I get one? You can register with a GP by going online www.nhs.uk and entering your postcode. You will find lots of useful information and advice on a range of common conditions and illnesses. You can access NHS 111 for free - this service provides 24/7 access to advice and treatment recommendations from a range of multi-professional clinicians. I have questions about these changes. Who can I contact? Tower Hamlets Council is facing unprecedented cuts to its funding, with pressure to save £58m from its annual budget over three years since 2015, with growing demands and tough choices. The money provided by government for both education and council services is being reduced, and difficult decisions must be made about how to use limited funds where they can have the most impact. The independent Schools Forum, which distributes schools’ funding in Tower Hamlets, has already decided to stop paying for the council’s three day care nurseries so that the money can be used to support schools including our maintained early years provision and so many more children. The new contract for delivery of these Public Health Services (0-5) will begin in April 2019.
The Health Visiting Service is a workforce of specialist community public health nurses who provide expert advice, support and interventions to families with children in the first five years of life. They aim to support and empower parents to make decisions that positively influence their family’s future health and wellbeing. FNP is an evidence-based, preventive public health home visiting programme for vulnerable first time young mothers aged 19 and under. Structured home visits, delivered by specially trained family nurses, are offered from early pregnancy until the child is two.
